The debate about India’s next Test captain is heating up, and former cricketer Mohammad Kaif has voiced a strong opinion on the matter. With Rohit Sharma stepping aside after a string of underwhelming performances, the focus has shifted to finding a new leader for India’s red-ball side. While Jasprit Bumrah’s name is being floated as a strong contender, Kaif believes it’s not the best choice.
Bumrah, India’s pace spearhead, has been a game-changer in recent years. His ability to rattle even the best batters has made him invaluable to the team. But Kaif thinks that giving him the captaincy could do more harm than good. “Bumrah is like the golden goose. You don’t want to overload him with responsibilities that could hurt his primary role as a bowler,” Kaif said in a social media post.
Kaif’s concerns stem from Bumrah’s injury history. Fast bowlers already deal with a heavy workload, and Bumrah has had his share of breaks to recover. Adding captaincy to the mix could stretch him thin and even put his fitness at risk. “He needs to focus on staying fit and taking wickets. The pressure of leading the team might take a toll on him, physically and mentally,” Kaif wrote.
The timing of this discussion is critical. Rohit Sharma’s struggles with the bat have raised questions about his place in the Test side. After a disappointing performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he decided to sit out the final Test in Sydney. Although Rohit clarified that he isn’t stepping down as captain or retiring, the speculation around his future continues to grow.
Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, now faces a tough call. Kaif has suggested two alternative names—KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. Both have experience leading the side in the past and bring different strengths to the table. Rahul is known for his calm demeanor and tactical approach, while Pant’s aggressive style and natural leadership have earned him praise.
“Between KL Rahul and Pant, the selection committee has options that won’t compromise the team’s core strengths,” Kaif said. “Rahul has led in tough situations, and Pant brings a fearless attitude that can inspire the team. Either of them can be a good choice without disrupting Bumrah’s role.”
Bumrah’s name has gained traction because of his on-field maturity and ability to handle pressure. Many believe his leadership skills were evident when he captained India during a Test in England last year. But as Kaif pointed out, captaining a team isn’t just about tactics; it’s also about managing the additional stress. For a fast bowler who’s already managing the physical toll of his job, this could be a gamble.
The selectors are expected to take their time before announcing a decision. The next Test series is still six months away, giving them room to weigh their options. However, the discussion around this topic isn’t going away anytime soon. Fans and cricket pundits are divided, with some backing Bumrah for his cricketing brain and others agreeing with Kaif’s cautious approach.
