The movie’s success, which grossed over ₹120 crore worldwide, has left Pragya feeling grateful and excited for the year ahead. She spoke to Hindustan Times about her experience in the film, her role as a fierce character, and her second time working with the legendary actor Nandamuri Balakrishna.
A Fresh Start in Daaku Maharaaj
In Daaku Maharaaj, Pragya takes on a role quite different from what audiences might expect from her. She plays Kaveri, a woman who’s not only an engineer-turned-robber but also a pregnant character. This was an exciting challenge for Pragya, as she had never portrayed a mother on-screen before. “The character was something completely new for me,” she says, reflecting on her journey into this intense role. “Kaveri is strong, de-glam, and protective of her unborn child. She fights for a cause, showing the strength of women. It felt powerful to bring that to life.”
What really set this role apart was the mix of emotions and physical demands that came with it. Pragya points out how different it was to play a pregnant woman who is also involved in action sequences. “It was an entirely new experience. I had to imagine what it would feel like to be a mother and protect my child, while also being fierce and selfless,” she explains. It’s clear that Pragya put her heart into portraying this character, and the audience response has been overwhelming.
Reuniting with Balakrishna
One of the most exciting aspects of Daaku Maharaaj for Pragya was working alongside Nandamuri Balakrishna for the second time. Their first film together was Akhanda in 2021, and they shared great chemistry on-screen. This time, Pragya was even more impressed by Balakrishna’s professionalism and work ethic. She describes him as a positive and collaborative co-star who has so much to offer. “He’s a legend in the industry. Working with him was pure joy,” Pragya says with a smile. “He is respectful, makes everyone feel equal, and is always so positive. The way he switches between different moods on set is something I really admire.”
When asked about the age gap between the two, Pragya takes a straightforward approach. Balakrishna is nearly three decades older than her, which could be a point of contention for some. However, Pragya doesn’t see it as an issue. “It doesn’t matter as long as the role is written well and both actors do justice to it,” she explains. Pragya adds that the audience’s belief in the relationship between the characters is what matters most. “When we filmed Akhanda, we wondered how the age gap would be perceived. But the way the film was shot, it felt natural. If the story works, the audience will accept it.”
Pragya’s Exciting 2024 and Beyond
Pragya has had an eventful 2024 as well. She made her Bollywood debut with Khel Khel Mein, a film that she describes as a fun and enjoyable experience. She was part of a talented ensemble cast, which included Akshay Kumar and Taapsee Pannu. Pragya recalls her debut fondly, saying, “It was a fantastic way to start my Bollywood journey. I got to work with such great actors, and I’m glad the audience has been supportive of my performance.”
